Joe Pikulski & Myron Gilbert use Fiskas & Little Atom lures to win over $3,000 First Place at Knutson's Midwest Open, NAIFC Qualifying tournament. January 27, 2008

On Sunday, January 27th, 63 x 2-man teams launched from the State Park on Wamplers Lake for the first Midwest Open Qualifier Ice Tournament, hosted by Knutson's Recreational Sales in Brooklyn, MI. The weather cooperated and the lake and its' finicky red ears lived up to its' reputation for a tough bite. The field was definitely leveled as teams who did well in pre-fishing returned to their GPS spots on game day only to find empty weeds or skittish fish. Captains Joe and Myron are Pro Staffer's for Team FISKAS and Little Atom. Sticking to their game plan and hole hopping with their ice rods readied and riggied with FISKAS jigs tipped with Little Atom super-soft plastic tails, was the winning ticket for Joe & Myron, winning the tournament with 5.96 pounds [8 Gills and 8 Crappie] along with the Big Fish award for a 0.65 lb Red Ear put them ahead of the pack and in the Championship money! Besides the cash prize, Joe and Myron also were awarded awesome hand crafted bluegill plaques that will look awesome on their wall to remind them of the great day on the lake. The weigh-ins were held indoors in the Brooklyn Middle School two hours after the check-in and buckets were sealed at the lake. This format was a big hit for the families and community allowing everyone to enjoy the weigh-ins and suspense of seeing who won! Knutson's added prizes for teams placing 25, 35 and 55 place so everyone stayed for the entire event to see where they would end up placing. There were a pair of Shappell one-man tents, a NEW Ice Gator battery powered auger, Little Atom Bug Luggage and lures. Thanks again to Knutson's for organizing a terrific event and to the key sponsors of Shappell, Ice Gator augers, Little Atom, and Subway for their sponsorship of this event. Next year expects to have even a larger turnout! Congratulations to all the 15 top finishers for qualifying for a spot to fish in the Championships under the newly formed National Ice Fishing Champions (NAIFC) organization. There are several NAIFC qualifying tournaments throughout the winter, for more information about the NAIFC tournament circuit, visit the NAIFC website at www.naifc.org
